Crude oil itself isn’t much of the problem when it comes to pipeline corrosion. Believe it or not, oil has many corrosion inhibiting properties. However, some traces of water, sulfur, and sediment carried in oil can collect over time at the bottom of the pipe, causing problems. Consequently, when moisture touches steel, corrosion begins. As you can see, internal oil pipeline corrosion isn’t a matter of will it happen, so much as when it will happen.

Heat can also be a factor in corroding pipelines. Oil pipelines are kept hot in order to keep oil flowing; however, heat can lead to thinning interior walls.

Fortunately, the exterior of pipelines are much easier to prevent against corrosion. Although, that doesn’t make it any less important to maintain. The exterior part of the pipeline is exposed to the elements which can just as easily beat its effectiveness.

In order to avoid these problems, pipelines should be well insulated and lined with anti-corrosion coatings. For more information on how Spear Industrial can help with your next project, give us a call at 432-606-4093.
